Johari means ‘something precious’ in Swahili
Children form up to 70% of Kibera’s population (Africa’s largest slum) - many face a difficult future with very little opportunity for education and self-development. Miale Community Programmes created by Johari foundation are dedicated to serving the best interests of the children and young adults. Miale, which means ‘rays of sunshine’ in Swahili, is focused on nurturing each child by working with them at a grass roots level. The programmes are tailored to meet the needs of the children and to help create positive outcomes through a constructive timeline.

To enable the Miale Community Programmes to become self-sustainable, the Johari Foundation established Johari as a not for profit social enterprise. Johari aims to deliver not only world-class products, but economic opportunities for the children and young adults supported on Community Programmes. Johari, which means ‘something precious’ in Swahili, makes stylish beautiful clothing and accessories that people love. Every item is handmade in Kenya by Social Enterprise Johari Designs.

Johari is a quality fashion label that combines the best of Kenyan and UK design. As well as clothing, the range includes jewellery, hand-crafted from locally sourced materials. The philosophy behind Johari is to produce clothes and jewellery that are not only beautiful, but ethical too. The Apprenticeship Scheme is to deliver a one-year curriculum in fashion and jewellery making. On completion of the course graduates can obtain employment with Johari Fashion, set up their own business, or find employment with another fashion house. The skills gained are invaluable and provide the opportunity for these young adults to rise out of poverty, take charge of their lives and enable them to build a self-supporting future for themselves, their families and communities. 100% of the profit from sales of Johari clothing and jewellery is fed back in to the Miale Programmes, helping to support children in Kenya with school fees, basic and social needs.
