Miss D.

Did you watch the movie “Driving Miss Daisy” starring Jessica Tandy as Miss Daisy and Morgan Freeman as Miss Daisy’s driver Hoke Colburn where action took place in the 50s and 60s of the last century? Remember the scene at the cemetery when Miss Daisy, while taking care of her husbands' grave, asked Hoke to find the neighbouring grave of Bauer family few rows further and place flowers on the grave. The confused Hoke made a confession that he could not read and find the proper grave. Such stories were not unusual at the time when Dr. Martin Luther King was writing history in America.

Today is New Year’s Day, 1st of January 2018, and I faced Miss Daisy’s situation. No, I am not on a mission to Ethiopia. I am in an European Union country.

At about 11 am I walked through the empty streets of Todorichene village to get to the self-service coffee machine and have nice espresso for 0.40 lv (0.20 Euro). Approaching the machine, about ten meters away, I saw a little girl, alone, about 10 year’s old who looked at me for a moment and then focused on the machine again. When I reached the place, she was already expecting me and asked politely “Uncle*, can you please show me, which button to press to get a cup of cocoa with milk!”. I looked at the programmed buttons and saw that every option had a clear description what will be served, if you insert the coins. Then I realized that the little sweet girl with long eyelashes was illiterate. She was embarrassed.

Miss D. as I am going to call my character, is attending school in the neighbouring village Roumiantsevo full time, 3rd grade. Usually, the kids in the normal schools learn to read in the first grade.

What is the future of this lovely illiterate kid, the readers of this post might guess…?

This blog is about girls like our Miss D. expecting the Wind of Change, this time not from Moscow, not even from Brussels, this time from those who care! We will let you know what happened to our Miss D. in several months and if you want to help us change her life, please get in touch with us.

*usual approach in Bulgaria
