LITHUANIA GENERAL ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT AND REVOLUTION OF THE TEXTILE/CLOTHING INDUSTRY IN 2006

Evolution of clothing textile/clothing activity

Lithuanian apparel and textile industry is one of the oldest industry branches in Lithuania with long lasting traditions. It is a traditional industry of the country, which makes different and various production, which is attractive to foreign investors and has a perspective in international market. After joining European Union international trade of Lithuanian apparel and textile industry has became more active. During 2006, export has increased in 8% compared with last year, wages grew by 14%. Business partners are making bigger orders, because they appreciate Lithuanian producer's high qualification, product's quality and short delivery time. However new important problems have turned up, which are related with the emigration of high qualification workers and almost non existing free labour force reserve. During last year apparel and textile sector has lost more than 3 thousand workers.

Main indexes of this branch:

  • It is one of the branches which makes a big gross domestic product: 10% of county's manufacture GDP;
  • One of the main exporters with a positive trade balance. In 2006 export was for 3,47 billion Litas, export to EU counties made about 78,7% of all apparel and textile export;
  • 43,7 thousand employees are working in apparel and textile sector (20% of total industry's employees), in which 33,6 thousand are women (20 . % of sector's employees);
  • Sector is attractive for investment - according to data of the 1st October 2006, 430 mill. Litas has been invested to the production of apparel and textile. During 9 months of 2006 direct investment has grown by 17,6 mill. Litas.
